DESCRIPTION
Due to systemic racism, youth of color are vulnerable to the deleterious physical and psychological impact of race-based traumatic stress. However, mental health clinicians and organizations are underprepared to provide the appropriate racial trauma assessments and interventions needed to support youth of color meaningfully and competently. In partnership with the KY Department for Behavioral Health, Developmental and Intellectual Disabilities (BHDID), the Collective Care Center (CCC) has developed a comprehensive racial trauma therapy manual for the treatment of race-based traumatic stress in youth of color ages 6-12. Additionally, the CCC has developed an accessible training program for clinicians that supports their clinical development in youth racial trauma therapy and assessment. Members from the CCC and the KY BHDID will facilitate a panel discussion that explores the following areas: (1) youth racial trauma, (2) youth racial trauma therapy and assessment training, and (3) creating a racial trauma informed mental health organization. Participants will leave the panel discussion with an increased understanding of the impact of youth racial trauma as well as tangible ways to support youth of color clinically and at the organizational level.
