Although many college and university students will experience a mental health challenge, institutions of higher education are rarely equipped to adequately meet these needs. Evidence suggests that counseling centers are frequently understaffed, underfunded, and overwhelmed. Simultaneously, the public mental health system often struggles to engage transition-aged youth and to ensure continuity of care. In this presentation, Dr. Brett Scofield, Executive Director for the Center for Collegiate Mental Health at Penn State University, will share findings from ongoing data collection efforts about the experiences of students and providers on college and university campuses. Listeners will also hear from Shantel Lagard about strategies for being able to engage students and create supportive environments for students with mental health challenges.
