System of Care is not a new concept to tribal communities, but has existed as a way of life for surviving and thriving together for centuries. When the values and principles of System of Care were formally published, they were easily accepted by many tribal communities because they embody indigenous societal ways of working together for the good of the collective, sharing resources, and listening to the voices of elders and youth. Attempts to colonize indigenous peoples resulted in major shifts away from this way of life. One of the results was forced systems that were fragmented, disconnected, and being driven by the top with little to no guidance from the community. These broken tribal systems are a reflection of broken mainstream systems with the added burden of continued institutionalized racism and discrimination that maintain the ongoing disparities and inadequate funding and resources Tribal Nations face. NTTAC Fatherhood Curriculum
Fathers often face challenges to programmatic inclusion in a number of ways., this curriculum highlights stories from communities around the country to illustrate the importance of including fathers from all backgrounds. Additionally, it provides a comprehensive set of resources on father engagement programming. Practitioners, program leaders, advocates, and other professionals working in our early childhood systems of care will walk away understanding the why and the how of authentic father engagement. Supporting Justice Impacted Youth with Disabilities
This recorded session will include two 25-minute presentations. Presentation 1Decriminalizing Disability: Supporting Youth to Dismantle the School-to-prison Pipeline In this session we will discuss the how cross-systems advocacy is utilized to address the behavioral and mental health needs of justice involved youth across three distinct settings: 1) school through the IEP process, 2) the community through Medicaid/children’s behavioral health services, and 3) court through reasonable accommodations. Research shows that 65 – 70 percent of justice-involved youth have a disability, and the majority of which are behavioral health needs. We will review the overrepresentation of youth of color with behavioral health needs in the justice system and how effective education advocacy and community supports can be tools for preventing mis-incarceration through both out-of-court and in-court advocacy and training. Youth Centered Mental Health Strategies for Hope, Healing and Health
This session is a presentation on Hope, Healing and Health Collective Report; a youth-driven approach to collaboratively generate qualitative data in an effort to uplift and address the needs of youth mental health and youth-generated policy solutions. It will go into depth on the development of a youth-led policy council, and the process in which we engaged young people in generating and analyzing qualitative data from youth across the country, particularly from their peers in historically marginalized communities including Native American, Black, Latinx youth to create policy recommendations that address alarming mental health inequities.
