Using Young Adult Perspectives to Clarify Key Peer Support Activities, Skills and Challenges
Formal, paid peer support has become increasingly available as component in the service array within systems of care for children, youth and young adults. However, research and evaluation studies have documented that peer support is often poorly implemented, leaving peer support specialists (PSSs, ie those who provide peer support) and their supervisors and managers unclear about exactly what the role entails and what skilled practice looks like. This lack of clarity about the role can cause frustration and exacerbate stress and turnover among PSSs. These same issues with peer support implementation were identified by an advisory board, comprised primarily youth and young adults, that was connected to statewide efforts to improve the extent to which systems of care were responsive to the needs of older youth and young adults up to age 24. As we begin to emerge from COVID-19, it is important to recognize the major changes undertaken by schools, for-profit, non-profits, and counties and the new ideas and practices that have emerged through the Systems of Care Grant. The pandemic exacerbated student challenges with their learning and mental wellbeing. Research demonstrates that to improve schools and community wellbeing it requires focusing on the importance of strength-based, developmental approaches where youth partnered with adults experience care & belonging, respect & power sharing. In this session participants will experience what an existing blueprint for a youth centered system of care looks and feels like. Participants will learn what upholding and honoring child rights looks like practically as exemplified by our restorative practices continuum that has seven entry points with intervention and prevention as bookends. Participants will understand how we embody the term “meeting youth where they are at” with real time examples such as how we support youth in their communities, schools, detention centers, mental health facilities and beyond through our State of the Young People Collective.
