As mental health, wellness, and system leaders, we must be intentional in not making prejudgments about individuals who are different from us, and those whose actions do not align with our values and norms. Prejudgments are dangerous, especially for racially/ethnically diverse and marginalized individuals and communities. Addressing Equity In all Collaborative Efforts: Are We READY?
As system of care and mental wellness providers, we often isolate equity work to our internal processes, procedures, services, and outcomes. However, when we focus only on our internal capabilities, we leave out a very important component: community collaborations. When community collaborations are diverse and fostered intentionally, they can serve as fertilizer for long-term equitable outcomes. They allow organizational staff to focus in their areas of expertise while working with other organizations, when the choices and holistic needs of the youth, young adult, and families they serve extend beyond what they can effectively offer. Clergy and other faith leaders are a primary source of mental health information and intervention for their congregations. Youth and families frequently identify faith communities as part of their natural support systems and approach their leaders for mental health consultation. These congregations are an important partner in systems of care work. To be effective, however, faith leaders need to be trained on how to deliver culturally responsive, youth-driven, and family-driven care. Many social services relevant for mental health and wellness are housed within faith-based organizations, and congregations can facilitate, implement, and sustain community change efforts.
